About Black Hill Dobermans

Doberman puppies are born and raised on a 30 Acre farm property, with plenty of room to grow and explore before going to their forever home. Dobermans are a very energetic, tenacious, and loyal breed, and require the right household to live in.

We are located on a beautiful 30-acre farm located in Prince Edward County. We are insured and have a Registered Veterinary Technician on site.

Black Hill Dobermans is in good standing with the CKC and the Doberman Pinscher Club of Canada.

History

Black Hill Dobermans officially started in 2019, though the passion for the breed started long before the birth of the kennel.

Andrew decided he would own Dobermans at the young age of 7, after meeting and befriending a large black and tan male named Zack. Andrew spent many of his childhood years dreaming of owning a Doberman and reading every publication about Dobermans he could get his hands on. At 20 years old, Andrew became the owner of Ryder, an 8-week-old black and tan male. Ryder and Andrew were one and the same. This loyal, intelligent dog quickly became Andrew’s best friend, and Andrew spent every spare minute he had training Ryder and taking him around Toronto to show off his loyal companion.

Scout, a female Euro line dobe, joined the pack shortly after. Ryder and Scout drove Sam to pursue her passion for veterinary medicine, and she graduated from the veterinary technician program at Seneca College with high honours in 2013.

The pursuit of their lines started with a fascination with protection sports and led to more extensive research into the health, looks and sports titles of European Dobermans. Their goal quickly became to have a kennel that produced Dobermans of the highest quality. These dogs would be suitable for work, with a stable temperament, and the undoubtedly look of the perfect European Doberman.

Health and Wellness

With extensive knowledge in Dobermans, veterinary medicine and training, Andrew and Sam started Black Hill Dobermans. A large focus is put on pedigrees, with a strong understanding of temperament, looks, and genetics. With the intent to better the breed, and continue the work from previous breedings, the Dobermans chosen for the program at Black Hill are carefully handpicked. Black Hill Dobermans follows the Orthopaedic Foundation of America, with a focus on gold-standard health testing previsions. These Dobermans are CKC and FCI registered. Full health testing includes annual heart screenings, full blood work, OFA hip screening, DNA testing for Thyroid, DCM 1 and 2 and vWD. They are regularly vet checked, fully vaccinated, and are on regular deworming/flea and tick prevention.

Black Hill Dobermans is part of Black Hill Dog Company, a high-volume dog training facility that specializes in puppy foundations, behaviour modification, and advanced training such as personal protection, scent work, and agility.

 FAQs

Have questions about our Doberman puppy litter? Have a read-through of our frequently asked questions. Need more information? Feel free to drop us a line through our online submission form.

  • All potential new families will be required to complete an application. Our application process includes a written application, which requires two references, a family veterinarian if you are a current or previous pet owner, and a local dog trainer. We then require a phone or Zoom interview. If the application is approved, new owners are required to sign a deposit contract and submit a deposit to hold their puppy.

  • Yes, both by request and through a link on the website.

  • Puppies come vaccinated for DHPP and Bordetella. They are dewormed at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. Puppies are microchipped, cropped and docked and registered with the CKC. There is also a 4-week insurance trial and the puppy 101 course is included with the purchase.

  • Gestation is 63-65 days from the time of mating. We confirm pregnancy via ultrasound on day 33 and complete a foetal count x-ray on day 54. The ultrasound only confirms pregnancy, not the number of foetuses. The x-ray will give a ballpark range of how many puppies we are to expect, but will not confirm the sex or colour of the puppies.

  • Our top priority for our puppies is ensuring they go to the best-suited family possible. From birth to 6 weeks, a puppy's temperament is constantly changing, and environmental factors and social development play a large role in the puppy's overall personality. We use our experience and knowledge to choose the best puppies that fit the needs of the family, for the family to choose from. We find out the needs of the puppy’s new home through the application and interview discussion, and create the puppy selection process based on suitability. Is this a family pet, a service dog, or being used for sport? This plays a large role in the puppy selection process for us as breeders and trainers as well as the future families. The order of puppy selection is based on when you left your deposit. Ie. If you were the first person to leave a deposit, you're the first to choose from the puppies best suited for you.

  • We send our puppies home between 8 and 10 weeks. Generally, as soon as ear cropping is completed, puppies are sent home within 24-48 hours. This ensures the best healing practices for the ears, as well as having your puppy home during the most critical social and environmental development period.

  • We provide as much care as we can throughout this process. We send supply lists, instructional video, and phone/email support. We will even have you back to the kennel for an in person demo if needed. The ear cropping and posting conversation starts early, to set up new owners for the best success possible.

  • We have a 2 year health guarantee on all puppies.

If the puppy has a genetic defect detected by a licensed veterinarian within the first TWO years (guarantee ends when pup turns TWO years old) another dog of equal value will be provided as a replacement.

  • We ship dogs within Canada and to the USA. All costs associated with the shipment of the puppy are the sole responsibility of the new owner. This includes crate, cost of fright and the cost of transport via airplane or ground. We will organize transportation and flight details.
