Statement on Ear Cropping and Upcoming 2027 Legislation
With new legislation regarding ear cropping set to take effect in January 2027, we recognize that this change will mark a significant transition for the Doberman community. As responsible breeders, we encourage prospective owners to look beyond aesthetics and focus on the qualities that truly define an exceptional Doberman.
For generations, reputable breeders have prioritized sound temperament, stable character, correct structure, health, and strong pedigrees above appearance. These are the traits that contribute to a Doberman's ability to excel as a loyal companion, family guardian, performance dog, and ambassador for the breed.
While the traditional cropped ear has long been associated with the Doberman's iconic appearance, it is only one aspect of the breed. We encourage buyers to appreciate the Doberman for its intelligence, athleticism, courage, loyalty, and unwavering devotion to its family.
As we move forward, our commitment remains unchanged: to preserve and improve the breed through thoughtful breeding practices, careful selection, and a dedication to producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs with strong pedigrees and sound temperaments.
The wonder of the Doberman lies not in the shape of its ears, but in the remarkable dog behind them. We invite future owners to celebrate and appreciate the breed for all that it is.

Gestation is 63-65 days from the time of mating. We confirm pregnancy via ultrasound on day 33 and complete a foetal count x-ray on day 54. The ultrasound only confirms pregnancy, not the number of foetuses. The x-ray will give a ballpark range of how many puppies we are to expect, but will not confirm the sex or colour of the puppies.

Our top priority for our puppies is ensuring they go to the best-suited family possible. From birth to 8 weeks, a puppy's temperament is constantly changing, and environmental factors and social development play a large role in the puppy's overall personality. We use our experience and knowledge to choose the best puppy that fit the needs of the family. We find out the needs of the puppy’s new home through the application and interview discussion, and create the puppy selection process based on suitability. Is this a family pet, a service dog, or being used for sport? This plays a large role in the puppy selection process for us as breeders and trainers as well as the future families.

We send our puppies home between 8 and 10 weeks. Generally, as soon as ear cropping is completed, puppies are sent home within 24-48 hours. This ensures the best healing practices for the ears, as well as having your puppy home during the most critical social and environmental development period.

Health and Wellness
Black Hill Dobermans was founded by Andrew and Sam through a shared passion for the Doberman breed and a combined background in professional dog training, behaviour, and veterinary medicine. Our goal is to produce healthy, stable, and versatile Dobermans while preserving and improving the qualities that make the breed exceptional.
Every dog selected for our breeding program is carefully chosen based on pedigree, temperament, structure, health, and genetics. We place a strong emphasis on preserving sound working ability and stable temperaments, with each breeding thoughtfully planned to build upon generations of responsible breeding.
Health is a cornerstone of our program. All breeding dogs are both CKC (some FCI registered) registered and undergo comprehensive health testing following Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) recommendations and current breed best practices. This includes annual cardiac evaluations (echocardiogram and 24-hour Holter monitor), OFA hip evaluations, thyroid testing, von Willebrand Disease (vWD) DNA testing, routine blood work, and regular veterinary examinations.
Black Hill Dobermans is proud to operate under Black Hill Dog Company, a professional training facility specializing in puppy development, behaviour modification, advanced obedience, personal protection, scent detection, and agility. This unique foundation allows every puppy to benefit from an environment built around early learning, confidence development, and professional handling from the very beginning.
Choosing our Families
Dobermans are a very energetic, tenacious, loyal breed, and require the right household to live in. Great care is given when placing these puppies.
Black Hill Dobermans provides lifelong support to new and existing owners, and having an ongoing relationship is important. The interview process is taken very seriously, and we would love to know a little bit more about you and what would make you the perfect caregiver/owner for one of our Dobermans.
All potential new families will be required to complete an application, followed by a phone, zoom, or in-person interview after the application approval.
